While it might have seemed like spring was never going to make it’s arrival, we’ve finally reached that wonderful time of year when the weather shifts and we can start dreaming about summer.
One of the ways we like to get into the swing of warmer weather and longer days is to prep our yards and gardens for another season of backyard barbecues and patio lounging.
Garden and Yard Maintenance
Although it may seem obvious to some, one of the most important things you can do at this time of year to keep your yard and garden in good shape is to rake up leftover leaves and dead grass from the dry winter months. This will leave room for new growth and will keep your lawn looking fresh and ready for flowers and other greenery as the weather gets warmer. It’s also important to start mowing early to ensure that grass grows back healthier and thicker throughout the summer. Use a combination of fertilizer and herbicides to prevent crop ups of crabgrass and other weeds – it’s always a good idea to start the battle early!
Choosing What to Plant
The fun part comes when you’ve finished up with all the maintenance required to repair any damage from the winter. We always love a trip to a local greenhouse to find a good mix of perennials, annuals, and seeds. Depending on how large your garden and yard are, we love having a mix of both beautiful, decorative plants and a garden bed set aside to grow herbs and vegetables so you can enjoy fresh produce throughout the summer. Things like flower boxes for your windows are a unique and trendy way to display gorgeous blooms as the days heat up.
Designing Your Garden and Yard
The great thing about creating a garden is that you can scale the size up or down for the space you have. No need to try and squeeze tulips into your front garden bed if they just don’t fit. Simply hang a window box from a front window and plant flowers and greenery there. If you’ve always dreamed of a large vegetable garden but just don’t have the room, try planting a small herb garden in pots placed along a sunny path behind your home.
Another way to bring a fresh look to your yard is with new patio blocks or stones. Creating a space in your yard that works for both backyard parties and as a play area for the kids can be a tricky balance, but a fresh, updated patio is a great place where everyone can enjoy outdoor meals, or even a fire pit.
