Selecting one or two focal points in a kitchen brings visual interest to the space without too much clutter. Invest in your focal point items first and then build the rest of the kitchen around them. The following ideas will get you started choosing kitchen focal points that fit your style, existing space, and budget.

Backsplash

A kitchen backsplash is critical for protecting the walls from food and drink spills and splatters. Many modern kitchens feature a distinctive backsplash that takes the room up a notch. Consider a backsplash in bold colors with an interesting pattern, such as chevrons.

Accent countertop

Choosing an accent countertop in a different color, pattern, or finish than the rest of the countertops sets the space apart naturally. If you’ve selected a neutral countertop around the walls, pick a bright or unique countertop for the kitchen island (i.e. genuine hardwood slab).

Fun furniture

If you’re drawn to a bright color, it may be tempting to outfit your entire kitchen in that shade. Bar stools or kitchen chairs offer the color that you crave without the cost or commitment of a more permanent kitchen feature, such as cabinets or flooring.

Appliances

Appliances are another simple way to bring color into your kitchen without overwhelming the space or ensuring that the entire room will look outdated in five years. Don’t be afraid to customize one larger appliance, such as a refrigerator or dishwasher.

Cabinets

Painting cabinets is an easy, affordable option to spruce up the kitchen in a weekend. If you’re facing outdated cabinets that are still in good condition, think about sanding them down and repainting them. While you’re updating the cabinets, install new hardware as well.

Textured wall

Are you designing a monochrome kitchen? Textured walls bring variety to the space so it doesn’t become too monotonous. For example, a white 3D brick wall will pair beautifully with neutral countertops and cabinets.

Fabulous view

If you have a kitchen that boasts a great view, take advantage of it. Consider knocking out upper wall cabinets and installing large glass panels to maximize the available view. Add a pantry to an interior wall, and you won’t miss those upper cabinets.

Lighting

Having optimal lighting in the kitchen is key for an efficient, safe work space. Instead of choosing standard can lights and under cabinet strip lights, select a funky chandelier or handcrafted pendant lights.

One of a kind artwork

Artwork in the kitchen tends to be an afterthought. If you have the wall space for a large art piece, choose an original colorful piece that fits with the style of the home. Take care to select art that will withstand food spills, humidity, and grease.

Kid display

While there is nothing wrong with hanging high end artwork, you may prefer to display drawings and other kid creations in your kitchen. Create a pleasing display to let their paintings and other masterpieces shine for family and friends.
