Adding a Custom Loft to Your Home or Condo

Lofts are wonderful because they add space and height to a condo, usually creating a two story wall of glass – and hopefully view. But what do you do to remodel it? That 2 story space can be intimidating to decorate or renovate. Here are a couple ideas from a beautiful loft condo renovation we did in Vancouver.

Tip #1 – Work with the height – don’t ignore it or try to fight the height. One idea we used was to accentuate the height by creating vertical lines for the eye to follow. This was done by creating a wall feature using varied width boards from 4 to 8 inch wide and thicknesses from ½ inch to 1 inch. We installed them with staggered butt joints and about ½” apart. Our step-by-step process was to first paint the wall behind the feature the same color as the feature. The color then shows in the spaces between the boards (hard to paint after). Next we prepped the boards off site and pre-painted them. We snapped our vertical lines for a guide, then prepped the rear side of each board with glue (PL 400), and pinned the boards to the wall with a couple finishing nails, toe nailed at butt ends or countersunk on face. We kept the color all the same so it’s more of a backdrop and not too busy. This was cost effective and pretty amazing looking.

Tip #2 – Buy or have made an anchor piece of furniture or art. The space then becomes cohesive around this object. It can be anything as long as it’s large enough and focal like a table (as in our example), sculpture, art, etc.

Tip #3 – Convert entry foyer walls or other feature walls from painted drywall to wood panels. This upscale look changes the atmosphere considerably. In our loft example we installed custom dark panels in the foyer and wrapped along the wall to the kitchen, creating an integrated look that is truly superb.
