The following is courtesy of Gaile Guevara, one of Vancouver’s leading interior
designers. She has a strong following on Houzz and Pinterest which showcase her
outstanding modern esthetic. The data she collected was from their Houzz and Home
study.

In the Vancouver area specifically:

  • 88% of the respondents are homeowners, 83% are between 35-64
  • In the next two years, 82% of homeowners are planning to decorate or redecorate, 38%
are planning to remodel or build an addition, 12% are planning to build a custom
home (this was the most interesting stat during the presentation, Vancouver topped
the charts internationally with new home builds)
  • Vancouver Population approx. 600,000 and ranks the highest for new builds in world
  • Top projects planned among Vancouver area homeowners are bathrooms (29%
planning), kitchens (23%), and landscapes (17%)
  • Also in the next two years, 51% are planning to hire a general contractor, 20% a kitchen
& bath pro, 20% an interior designer, 20% an architect, and 39% a landscape pro,
    among other home professionals
  • 80% said improving the look/feel/flow/functionality was an important motivation behind
their projects, far higher than the 53% citing increasing home value; however home
value did increase as a motivator vs. last year.
  • Other important motivators? Storage & organization at 50%, energy efficiency at 41%
and incorporating new technologies, cited by 18%.
  • Biggest challenges for Houzzers when it comes to renovation & design? Finding the right
products and defining their style – a marketing opportunity for all pros on Houzz.
  • Top hiring criteria? The pro’s reviews & recommendations, that he/she is an expert in
their field, and that the pro has a personality the homeowner can work with.
  • Interesting survey result. Only 8% want the lowest price when looking at the contract
costs of working with a professional”
