Millions of people have made Toronto their home. The city’s government is committed to providing clean air and quality transportation, and City officials still aim to reduce the amount of bureaucracy in government agencies.
The North American Winner
Toronto is the 12th most sustainable city in the world. The Center for Economics and Business Research measured the city in three categories that impact sustainability. When it comes to meeting environmental and social demands, Toronto is far ahead of other North American cities. The Canadian city ranked higher than every major city in the United States in these categories.

Improved Air Quality – The city has been deemed the most efficient in handling air pollution and waste management. Greenhouse gases in the city have been reduced by 25 percent, and government officials expect the number to reach 30 percent by the year 2030. Despite the growing population, city officials have managed to switch to cleaner fuel sources.
Steady Population Growth – At the current rate of expansion, the city’s population is expected to increase by more than 25 percent. The increase is expected to happen over a 15 year period. The city’s parks have more than 10 million trees, and the government plans to grow 40 percent more trees by the year 2050.
Environmentally Friendly Buildings – All new buildings must meet new environmental standards. The changes have greatly improved the air and water quality. Government officials have implemented tiered environmental quality levels, and all buildings are required to meet the minimum requirements. City officials want contractors to exceed the basic standards, and builders who go beyond the minimum requirements are eligible for financial incentives.
Toronto is a financial hub for many multinational companies. Residents and tourists can easily move around the city speaking English or French. The diverse neighborhoods are attractive to singles and families, and several magazines have raved about Toronto’s safe downtown area. Many residents feel safe walking the streets after dark. Every year, contractors are making improvements in the city’s infrastructure. Government officials are collaborating with contractors to ensure that Toronto remains North America’s most sustainable city.
