It’s important to pay attention to current design trends when you purchase, renovate or decorate a home.
Home renovations are a major focal point of our work here at Alair Homes. Lately we’ve noticed some strong trends developing and emerging in the local areas we service in Canada. We thought it might be helpful for us to share our trend observations with you so that you can better evaluate whether your home is current with the trends, or could use some updating.
Homes Are the New Neighborhood Hot Spots
It used to be trendy for people to gather at local watering holes to hang out with friends and enjoy the nightlife. Nowadays, people are going out on the town less, and entertaining at home more. This has led to an increased demand for home renovations that transform houses into party palaces. Home theatres, game rooms, and wet bar areas are all desirable home upgrades, thanks to the influence of this trend.
Outdoor Resort Style Entertainment
Outdoor living spaces have evolved significantly in the recent past. In prior decades, it was out of the ordinary to find more than a basic patio, picnic table and barbecue out in the backyard. These days, people are building elaborate kitchen areas outdoors. A contemporary outdoor kitchen could include as many amenities as its indoor counterpart, frequently featuring its own fridge, storage space, counter space, wine cooler and fire pit. Intimate lighting is typically included to allow for comfortable entertaining after sunset.
In several of the warmer areas of the country we service, we’ve noticed some newly built lagoon-like swimming pools. Heated indoor pools are also of current interest to a small subset of the luxury home market.
Courtyard Curb Appeal
Courtyards are making an appearance in various locations around the home, from front entries inside the home to exteriors in either the front or back yards. The front yard courtyard is likely to include trees, flowers, potted plants, comfortable seating, and perhaps even a fountain or reflecting pool.
The Kitchen Goes High-Tech
Home automation is picking up steam, with wireless technology and mobile devices becoming more pervasive. Homeowners can now use their mobile devices such as cell phones to program their heating and lighting at home, plus kitchen appliances like their stoves, ovens and microwaves.
A Home Spa Experience in the Master Bathroom
Affluent trend-conscious consumers are currently implementing elaborate, spa-like designs in their master bathrooms, with amenities such as whirlpools and negative-edge tubs. Curbless showers remain popular as well.
