A remodel/renovation is often intended to breathe new life into spaces with a symphony of elements of expertise that guide the way to transformation. In this article we dive into a recent remodel / renovation in the neighbourhood of Anders in the City of Red Deer, Alberta named ‘The Centrality’ that consisted of some major decision of removing walls and changing the structure of some rooms, with some roadblocks on the way.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

An Elixr of Innovation, Design & Functionality.

The process of renovation is a visionary journey, where every project is a canvas for transformative artistry. The ultimate success depends on the commitment and coordination of all trades involved, but also the creative capacity of those foreseeing the entire project and their ability to innovate and design with functionality in mind.

In this renovation there was relocated access to the family room within a load bearing wall, due to new kitchen placement. The new kitchen placement also required reframing a kitchen wall to change window layout to match new kitchen sink location, and framing a new wall to divide the kitchen and living room areas.

A Smooth Process; The Importance of Adaptability.

Despite the success of this renovation, behind the scenes rendered its challenges— the homeowners were living in the house throughout the renovation process. The reno saw the entire main floor completely stripped and redesigned, which meant our homeowners were relegated to the 2nd floor bedrooms and their basement. Another challenge faced was finding signs of excessive moisture in an exterior wall in the family room, which was traced back to poor installation on a fireplace that ended up compromising the seal on the house. Thankfully, the fireplace was to be removed anyway, and the house envelope was properly sealed back up to prevent future issues.

Communication is Innovation.

Communication is key on a job like this. The Alair process means the clients receive consistent communication during the renovation, keeping them in the loop regarding any challenges or obstacles found, as well making sure the subtrades do the same. It is highly important that the homeowners feel in control of their renovation, and because the homeowners were still in the home, they were aware of every aspect of the project, knowing when to expect workers, disruptions, deliveries, etc. As a homebuilder, it is crucial to recognize how much a project like this can disrupt the lives of homeowners, and work hard to minimize those disruptions.

Conclusion

Design and functionality were crucial as the homeowners loved their home and neighbourhood, but struggled with an unfriendly layout on the main floor. This renovation rendered improved flow and sight lines in the home, while eliminating a formal dining room that just didn’t fit the homeowners’ unique needs and lifestyle.

How a renovation is approached can either be revolutionary or cultivate stagnancy and creative blocks ultimately decreasing the function of a space. The final product on this project was made possible by the harmony of all trades, the creative capacity of our team and their ability to innovate and design with functionality in mind, while simultaneously adapting as unique challenges arose— as well as consistent communication with homeowners— all imperative skills to change the face of Remodelling & Renovation and the key ingredients resulting in a magnificent transformation.
