Celebrate the holiday season in Parksville-Qualicum by seeking out the local activities for the whole family. Vancouver Island has no shortage of events that celebrate the richness of the local culture with the natural beauty of the season.

Music and Lights

For a celebration of lights and music the whole family will love,  plan a trip to Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach. The trails and some of the plants are decorated with lights. Visit the Teddy Bear’s home, see Santa’s Den, and browse through the Gingerbread House show. The Milner House has a Christmas gift shop and there’s a tea room and local musicians. The show runs for three weekends starting at the end of November through mid-December in the evenings.

One of the more unusual light displays is at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre. This sellout annual event will dazzle the whole family with the laser lights. Should you go, make parking and transportation arrangements early. There will be a shuttle because parking is limited and it’s always a sell-out event.

Skating and Swimming

Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville turns into a skating rink during school break in December. The Regional District decorates with stunning light and decoration displays for the holiday enjoyment of the whole family.

If skating isn’t on the agenda, try the holiday swim at Ravensong Aquatic Centre. Join the group to play reindeer pool games and visit Santa at the same time.

Family Fun

Morningstar Farm celebrates Christmas in mid-December by offering a free event with wagon rides, storytelling, crafts and live music. There will be a bonfire and roasted marshmallows, along with iconic hot chocolate and popcorn. You may find mulled wine and coffee as well.

If you have no time to visit the farm, why not take the Polar Express or the Santa Train to visit Santa with the kids on a Saturday afternoon? These trains let kids experience the grandeur of train travel that’s part of the heritage of Canadians.

Shopping

Shop for artisan gifts at One Crazy Day Christmas Market at Morningstar Golf Course. There will be 25 local artists, authors, sculptors, jewelers and others offering their goods that will include everything from sweet treats and herbal remedies. Eat hot dogs and chili or order off the menu from the golf course’s grill.

The Qualicum Beach Farmers Market is open year-round and a good place to shop for unique locally produced gifts. You’ll find homegrown beets, onions, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes, among other seasonal vegetables. Rosemary, sage and thyme are also in season. The market does close from Christmas to mid-January, so give them a call before you head out.

There is no shortage of events to go to if you’re looking for ways to celebrate the holidays in Parksville-Qualicum this year. Step outside from the fireside traditions and take in the festive charm the local area offers. Celebrate the holidays with your neighbors at Alair Homes!
