“Ben and his team do whatever is required to get the job done on time and on budget.
Ben has worked with us for years and is our go to guy for all of our electrical work.” – Stu Hopewell

At Alair, we are very selective of the trades that we work with. Our number one priority is to provide our customers with the highest quality of craftsmen who will work in unison with the rest of our team and to ultimately ensure that our customers are getting the quality, accuracy, and transparency they deserve. This week we will be doing a little Q&A with one of our favorite electricians here in Nanaimo. We’ve been fortunate to work with Ben and Mazzei Electric on a dozen or so projects, and hope you enjoy the interview we had with him.

Hi! What is your name and occupation? Ben Mazzei, owner of Mazzei Electric.

Tell us about the company you work for – how long have you been in business and what do you specialize in? Mazzei Electric has been in business for 21 years. We do residential, commercial and industrial electrical projects as well as service and maintenance work. We don’t specialize in any one part of the trade, but take pride in having a team that has experience in all parts of the electrical industry.

Can you describe a typical work day? No two days are alike. The project can change just as easily as the job site. Beyond the time spent onsite, we also spend a lot of time doing project management, such as meeting with clients, determining budgets and preparing project schedules.

What particular skills or talents are most essential to be effective in your job? You must have the people skills in order to engage with clients and team members, the organization to juggle multiple projects at a time, and a strong work ethic to get the work done.

What types of changes are occurring in your field and how do you stay on top of them? The majority of the changes we are seeing are in LED lighting, automation, and controls. We stay updated through training offered by manufacturers or the associations we belong to.

What projects have you worked on with Alair Homes? On the residential side we have done everything from small renovations to large custom homes. On the commercial side we have taken on projects from small tenant improvements to a complete renovation of an existing building to accommodate a large office space.

How should someone look for the ideal electrical contractor for their project? First thing you should confirm they have an up to date WCB clearance letter and electrical contractor’s license. Beyond that you should look for a contractor that has experience doing the type of work you require. Also, remember to always check references!

What is your favorite thing about your job? Engaging with the people. Whether it is the employees at Mazzei Electric, or one of our customers, it’s the relationships we build that make it all worth it.

Can you leave our readers with 3 Electrical Safety Tips?

1.  Replace any light switches that flicker or are hot to the touch

2.  Do not use water on an electrical fire, instead use a fire extinguisher or baking soda

3.  Never attempt electrical repairs or rewiring yourself if you do not have the proper experience
