Apartment living and city life has taken its toll on precious wardrobe space, but smart city slickers have figured out a way to make a little go a long way. Here’s a look at some quick and easy ways to increase your closest space.
Box it Up
Using neat storage boxes stacked up inside your closet can help you stay organized and ensure you make the most of the space available. It will force you to neatly fold every last garment and tuck it into a box to fit in as much as you can without ever getting the closet looking messy. Think of it as packing for a holiday – you’d try and cram something into every last inch of
space you had in your suitcase. This is the same, except with more space!
Stack Them Up
Use a single hanger with hooks to hang multiple clothes off that one hangar space. Get tiny metal S hooks that interconnect allowing you to put 4-5 garments per hangar, saving your precious cupboard rod space. To do this on the cheap, you could even try using a soda can, slotting one hangar through the first hole and a second one through the lower hole.
Don’t Ignore the Doors
The doors of your closet can also be used to store and hang clothes, scarves, ties and accessories. Hammer a couple of hooks or nails in or install a rod, and you will suddenly find your closet feeling a whole lot larger. Some savvy homemakers even installed mini shelves on the dead space in the cupboard.
Plenty of Hang Up
If you have a lot of hanger space, you can use it to hang multiple scarves off a single hanger or necklaces. Get creative. Add in shelves: If you can find some neat wooden planks, have them installed to add extra shelving. Often, a lot of space is ‘wasted’ on hanger space and you find yourself short of drawers and shelves. For a less expensive option, consider using old shoe boxes stacked up below your hanger space to make the most of the that larger section of your wardrobe.
Move Stuff Out
Besides cutting down on what you actually have, you may also want to move some stuff out of your closet. Shoes and sandals for instance, can easily fit into neat boxes and get tucked neatly under your bed.
