Construction sites account for a high rate of occupational hazards. Workers and project managers are constantly subjected to the risks of working on a site where hazards are prevalent. While you are vetting your contractor, it is really important to ensure that safety is taken seriously. Not only does the Ministry mandate certain minimums, we as professionals want to make sure that everyone is protected and working within a safe environment.

It is essential for construction project managers to keep these potential hazards in mind so that the project gets completed smoothly. Here are a few tips on how to ensure safety on construction sites:

Signs

Proper signage should be posted, maintained & visible to all who are on site.

Scaffolding

Construction project managers should ensure that scaffolds used on site are rigid, sound, and sufficient to bear a huge load without displacing or collapsing. Only a competent person should erect, move, dismantle or alter the scaffold so that there are no accidents.

Aerial Lifts

In case of construction jobs that require elevation, project managers can use aerial lifts for providing a safer working platform. They should consider erecting guardrails or control line systems so that workers don’t fall off the edge of the elevated platform. Safety net systems are also suitable for this purpose.

Ladders and Stairs

Stairways and ladders should be long enough to reach the working surface safely. Project managers should ensure that workers don’t overload ladders, otherwise they may break. Ladders having metallic parts should be avoided in areas close to overhead power lines.

Trench Protective System

Project managers should ensure that workers don’t enter a trench that lacks a protective system. A registered engineer should be employed to design a trench protective system. Sloping, shoring and shielding are good systems for securing trenches for construction workers.

Communication and Training

Project managers should communicate the potential hazards to construction workers much before starting the project. They should identify workers who may require training, and teach them how to operate certain machinery and equipment on site.
