Choosing to build a multi-sport court, or a rink in your backyard, can offer numerous possibilities. It can range from a small, concrete surface, to a large, composite surface that can be removed as easily as it was installed.

The preparation for the base or slab is similar in both. Close enough in fact that you can have both!

Preparation of the sub-base is the most important to the longevity of the surface. The chosen area must be flat, and compacted using clay—a material that packs well, and doesn’t wash away.

Next, a layer of compactable gravel or “crush” is laid down, preferably 8-12 inches thick. Just the right amount of water needs to be added to the gravel so it can be compacted to the maximum level—usually 98% or better. This gives the concrete a solid base to rest on, ensuring there is little to no movement as we go through the extreme shifts in weather throughout the course of a calendar year.

Having the right contractor for this type of work is paramount. The concrete needs to be finished smooth and flat, with minimal dishing or “bird-baths”. Now, don’t confuse “flat” with “level”. The concrete actually needs to slope slightly to a designated low point in order to shed the water in the warmer seasons. Again, the right contractor will know this.

No matter which sport it is that you feel you had a shot at the big leagues, the multi-sport court has you covered.

Hockey-ready boards can be erected on the perimeter, with netting installed 12 feet higher on top. This will keep any stray balls or pucks from ending up in your living room via the picture window. Chain link fence can also be a good option if hockey is not the game of choice, that way sight lines are a lot clearer.

The ¾ inch thick tiles, composed of a plastic-type material, are easily laid down and removed. This provides a level of shock absorption perfect for basketball, tennis, and so on.

If boards are not desirable, ice hockey can still be in play during the winter. Rink liners or bladders can be used to flood the area, providing use during the cold months.

In short, a well lit, purpose built multi-sport court could be the perfect option for any custom home. Whether it’s the kids’ 3-on-3 basketball tournaments in the summer, or Thursday night shinny with the boys in the winter, the options are endless.

Let the games begin!
