Delta continues to make improvements across our communities and neighbourhoods in order to improve quality of life and access to the many wonderful establishments in this area. As part of the ongoing Neighbourhood Road Improvement plan to address aging roads and sidewalks throughout the area, Delta has taken on a large scale road revitalization project.
The Delta Street Roadway Revitalization was introduced in 2012. Its goal is to support the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy, increasing viability for small businesses across Delta and helping the community to see improved economic growth. The project start date for the street revitalization was January 18, 2016, with the first stage including a water main replacement and road construction to follow.
Specific plans for the project include:
- A large scale water main replacement
- Storm sewer upgrades
- Improving sidewalks for safety and aesthetic value
- Landscaping including new trees being planted and a variety of pocket parts with improved irrigation
- Root barriers being placed so as to prevent future sidewalk damage from the trees’ root systems
- Stamped and coloured pedestrian crosswalks
- Green initiatives including the replacement of old street lights with decorative LED Ladner Style street lighting
- The addition of benches, garbage receptacles and bicycle racks in many areas
Specific information about the stages of this project and typical road construction process can be found here.
The Delta Street Roadway Revitalization will be completed block by block in an effort to reduce large scale traffic pattern disruptions and make it easier for cars and pedestrians to access the areas between 48 Avenue and Chisholm Street. As long as the project remains on schedule, the anticipated completion date is sometime in fall 2016.
If your plans include travel to the areas impacted by this project, it is important to note that parking will be impacted. This map is a handy guide that can help you to understand the parking disruptions and plan accordingly in order to reduce stress and frustration.
The road improvement initiatives are anticipated to continue in future years with new sites being selected for each project based on community needs, school zones, pedestrian safety, the desire to have a positive impact and the need for utility upgrades, such as the water main upgrade included in the current project. Residents of Delta are always encouraged to provide feedback about current and upcoming projects, and this feedback is reviewed and considered before making any final decisions and throughout each stage of a project.
Residents interested in finding further information on current and future revitalization initiatives across Delta are encouraged to visit the official Delta website or contact the project office during business hours, Tuesday thru Friday at 604-946-0368.
