Accessorizing in your home is very similar to accessorizing an outfit. You want to use your personal style to elevate the basic look, in this case, your furniture and decor, but when it comes to home accessories, you always want them to be functional. Too many non-functional items in your home can make it seem crowded, fussy, or like a museum. Any additions to your home should make it feel luxurious, relaxing and emphasize the style you’re trying to put together. Here are eight home accessories to make your home life just a little bit better with their presence.
Plug-in Sconce
These can be a quick update to a nook that’s otherwise somewhat drab and dreary. These plug-in sconces can lay flat against the wall or look for a model that has a swing arm, allowing you to use it in an area where you might otherwise use a pendant lamp. However, these plug-in versions don’t require you to have expensive (and annoying) electrical work done to shed some light on an underused area.
Sink Grate
A sink grate might not seem like such a stylish accessory, but a grate that rests between the dishes and the bottom of the sink can immediately hide the clutter that a regular drying rack provides. It also helps protect the sink surface from the dishes, and your dishes from the sink! This separation keeps your sink cleaner and makes chips and dings in your sink surface less likely.
Chopping Station
No matter how much counter space you have, chopping always seems to require more space than you have. A chopping station, created out of a drawer replaced with a cutting board, and positioned over a garbage can, makes this tedious prep just a little bit easier. Plus it’s a great conversation piece and a great place to rest wine or appetizers during a crowded party.
Leaning Mirror or Art
A very large piece of art of a mirror can be heavy and require extra work to have it properly hung on the wall. But why bother? This kind of weight can ultimately do actual damage to your wall, and when propped on the floor it even more chic, giving a space a very casual, loft-y vibe.
Terrariums
A terrarium planter is so easy even your kid can do it! These glass fish bowl like planters usually contain easy to manage plants like succulents, air plants, and cacti. All of these plants need much less care than regular houseplants, and the terrarium structure means they need even less. It’s almost like its little ecosystem in there. Another plus is that these types of planters tend to make less of a mess, and they’re harder for your pets or kid to access.
Picture Rails
Picture rails give you the ability to change your art as the seasons, or your moods, change. These are great for small spaces like entryways or narrow hallways too, where there might not be enough room for an entrance way table to collect keys and mail. Plus, no more holes in the walls!
Tech Storage Solutions
No one wants to see the 100 remotes we all have just laying around on your coffee table. Make a home for them in a remote box. A beautiful wooden box or even a shoe box covered in fun wallpaper scraps all do the job and keep those remotes out of sight.
Charging Station
Just like the remotes above, you don’t want to have to look at a snarled nest of cables beside every plug or wonder just where that iPad cord is, so make a charging station for the devices of everyone in the house. A desk drawer works great for this, and another plus is that you can let all the electronics recharge during dinner, and maybe have some real conversation with your family!
