What Insulation Should You Use for Your Home?
Many clients ask us which type of insulation we recommend for their home. Although there are many types of insulation that can effectively keep your home at a comfortable temperature, there is definitely certain insulation that might work better for your home’s specific design and/or budget.
Insulation can be sprayed in, blown in, or just set in place.
Fiberglass Insulation
This is the most cost-effective way to insulate your home. It comes in a batt for your wall or roof, or can also be blown in for your attic area. It is insulating because it is traps air inside of the billions of tiny glass fibers.
Mineral Wool Insulation
Mineral wool insulation is a rock-based fiber insulation. The minerals are melted and then spun into fibers. Some of its features are that it is moisture and rodent resistant, will not mold and is non-combustible. It is generally more expensive than fiberglass insulation but still more economical than spray foam insulation.
Spray Foam Insulation
As stated above, spray foam is one of the most expensive forms of insulation. However, it is also some of the best insulation for creating an air-tight seal in your floors, walls and ceiling, which in turn saves you money on heating and cooling costs. It sprays onto your walls like thick paint goo, and within a few seconds it expands and creates an air-tight seal.
Each type of insulation has its own benefits, but primarily your home design and budget play the biggest role in helping you decide which insulation is best for you. You may want to consider using a combination of the three types of insulation.
